The Single Particle Laser Ablation Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (SPLAT II) is the second-generation airborne mass spectrometer developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). It measures the size, number, and concentration of aerosol particles ranging from 125 nm to 600 nm in real time. It samples at 500 particles per second and records up to 100 individual particle mass spectra per second. SPLAT II has a precision better than 0.5%, enabling measurement of the density of spherical particles and the effective density of aspherical particles.
